Let’s start learning how to make a tool bag :-

Step One: Collect the Essential Tools and Materials

As a first step of your making a tool bag, you have to collect some materials and tools that you will have needed at the time of making. You will find them easily in your nearby hardware and grocery shop even.

This list of materials and tools is not very long. For you, I have mentioned below the name of some tools and materials that you must need for making the bag.

  • Leather or any leather-like material. If you don’t find that, you can pick any strong fabric for this purpose.
  • Wooden Dowel. It has to be big enough so that you can comfortably hold it in your hand.
  • Contact cement
  • Plywood Sheet for the bottom
  • Strong thread
  • Patches for decoration
  • Small plastic feet
  • Button magnets
  • Epoxy glue

  • Sewing machine. But the most important tool you need first at the time of hand sewing is tons of patience.
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing needles
  • Fabric scissors
  • Thimble
  • Marker
  • Awl
  • Small drill bit
  • Spade bit (same in size)
  • Cordless drill

As the material, I strongly recommend synthetic leather. Because it is strong and thick.   Besides, it is cheaper than other real leathers.

In the materials chart, you can also add some other things if you think essential for your making. You can also add a belt to your bag so that you can easily carry it around.

Step two: Prepare the Materials

At this stage of learning how to make a tool bag, you need to go through the physical making. Before starting physical making, make a template of your desired tool bag on a paper board. It is to just get the right shape.

Then take wooden dowel. Cut it according to the desired length. Eyeball a straight line then and cut it lengthwise in two. After that, move to the fabric. Carefully trace out the shape on the inside surface. Cut two smaller pieces.

Now move to the handles. Glue in four strong button magnets’ pairs. Then drill a small hole on both sides of the dowel. After that, drill holes with a spade bit. Finally, add epoxy for making it permanent.

Step Three: Assemble all the Materials

Cut a thin strip of your leather. Then glue and sew it to the edges of the handles. Now sew three lines. One is in the middle from the outside. And the others two are from the inside.

Now you have to sew the main section of your tool bag. To add strength, now glue and sew a thin extra strip in the edges of the bag. You can do this sewing now with a sewing machine anymore. For this, you have to go through hand sewing.

Do cross stitching to make it stronger. You can use two needles to complete it quickly. You may need to have an awl to punch holes at this stage of making!

Mind it; this process is really time-consuming, hard and painful. But don’t lose your patience.

Step Four: Attach the Handles

Now it is time for attaching the handles. Before attaching the handles, Use glue to both the surfaces. Then let it dry for five minutes or more. If it is dry enough, then Press them together firmly.

Step Five: Give the Finishing Touches

Now your tool bag is ready to some extent. You can now decorate your bag with few patches.

You can use iron-on patches for that purpose. But be careful as you are ironing synthetic leather. Because it melts really rapidly.

Bottom Line

Hopefully, finally, you are now fully informed about a good tool bag and the process of how to make a tool bag. To get the right tool bag that can serve your purposes, just consider its features. Choose your favorite models and a style which is fit your specifications. For a professional repairman or construction worker, it is very important to have comparatively a large tool bag.
